Istanbul is old, dating back thousands of years, and with that, there are many historical places to visit. Istanbul is gorgeous, with its assortment of mosques and their colorful tile work and dramatic architecture. Istanbul is charming; we met so many welcoming, friendly people here. And finally, Istanbul is home to the Hagia Sophia, an amazing architectural feat and one of the Wonders of the World.

If you have plans to visit Istanbul, you should know that there is a lot to see here. You can easily fill five days of your time in Istanbul. Hopefully, you have at least three days on your itinerary, but more time is ideal.

Either way, if you are like us, you will be dreaming about returning to Istanbul someday. It’s just that kind of city…it stays in your heart long after you leave.

2. Stroll Through the Grand Bazaar

With over 3,000 shops in a giant labyrinth of covered streets, Istanbul’s Grand Bazaar is shopping paradise. I had so much fun getting lost in the maze of colorful stalls selling everything from handcrafted wares to delicious Turkish snacks. Don’t forget to haggle!

A Bosphorus boat tour provides breathtaking views of Istanbul I loved seeing sights like the Dolmabahçe Palace, Bosphorus Bridge, and Ottoman-era fortresses as we sailed along the strait between Europe and Asia This relaxing cruise is a lovely way to see the city.

Visiting a traditional Turkish bathhouse, or hammam, is a quintessential Istanbul experience. I loved detoxifying in the sauna, scrubbing off dead skin, and soaking in relaxing baths. It left me feeling refreshed and rejuvenated. The beautiful historical hammams are worth a visit even just to admire the architecture.

7. Cross the Galata Bridge

The pedestrian Galata Bridge spanning the Golden Horn provides great views and is always buzzing with activity. Fishermen line the upper level while ferries and local fishing boats sail underneath. Grab a balık ekmek fish sandwich from one of the many vendors here for a tasty snack.

For nightlife, Taksim Square is where it’s at. I bar hopped around the vibrant Istiklal Street, drank cocktails on the rooftop lounges overlooking the city, and danced the night away in the pulsing clubs. Taksim has such a fun, lively atmosphere at night.

Visiting a local hammam isn’t just about the bathing experience. It’s also a fun social outing! I went with my new local friends and we giggled away exchanging stories while scrubbing and relaxing. The hammam is very communal so be prepared to make some new friends!

Walking through the opulent Topkapı Palace where sultans once lived made me feel like I was in an episode of Game of Thrones! Istanbul’s food scene is world-class. I dined at incredible restaurants serving mouthwatering Turkish cuisine, from flavorful kebabs and rich stews, to pistachio baklava for dessert. Be sure to try local specialties like the cheese-filled börek pastries and savory gozleme flatbreads. The fresh seafood along the coast is also sublime.

I loved exploring the fantastic modern and contemporary art museum Istanbul Modern. The striking Bosphorus-front building holds an impressive permanent collection and great temporary exhibits. I discovered many talented Turkish artists. The outdoor cafe with waterfront views is ideal for a coffee break.

13. Go Off the Beaten Path in Kadiköy

Venturing across to the Asian side, the Kadiköy neighborhood has a hip, local vibe with quirky cafes, antique shops, and bustling markets. Walking the charming backstreets and absorbing the artsy atmosphere made me feel like a local. I had my best cup of Turkish coffee in Kadiköy!

14. Step Back in Time at Basilica Cistern

The ancient Basilica Cistern beneath the city streets provided welcome respite from the summer heat. Wandering through the atmospheric subterranean chambers with ancient columns reflected in the waters was magical. The soft lighting and opera music added to the wow factor. Definitely one of Istanbul’s coolest attractions.

15. Shop Handicrafts at the Grand Bazaar

Beyond the glitzy jewelry and lanterns, the Grand Bazaar has some great spots to buy authentic Turkish handicrafts. Look for ceramics like the famous Iznik tiles, intricately woven textiles, molded-glass lamps, and painted ostrich eggs. Watching the artisans at work is fascinating.

16. Go Wine Tasting in Bozcaada

Take a weekend getaway to the blissful Bozcaada island in the Aegean Sea. I biked around this laidback island spotting windmills and old Greek houses. Exploring the family-run boutique wineries and tasting fragrant wines was a delightful experience. The island’s relaxing pace and sunny vineyards felt worlds away from bustling Istanbul.

Even if you don’t buy anything, the Spice Market near the Golden Horn is a feast for the senses. I was mesmerized by the vibrant pyramids of glimmering spices and patterned Turkish aprons dangling from the ceiling. Inhaling the exotic aromas transports you to faraway lands. Don’t miss this bazaar!

18. See Whirling Dervishes

My visit to the 15th-century Galata Mevlevi Lodge museum gave insight into Sufism and the mesmerizing whirling dervish ritual. Seeing the white-robed dervishes hypnotically spinning left me enthralled. Their whirling dance representing spiritual ascension is incredible to witness.

Wandering around Balat’s hilly cobblestone lanes, I discovered colorful old timber houses, dilapidated mansions, hidden churches, and trendy cafes. Roaming through this atmospheric Jewish quarter, one of the oldest parts of the city, made me feel like I’d traveled back in time. The Instagrammable backdrops make it very photogenic!

The Grand Bazaar has over 3,000 shops making it shopping heaven, but don’t get too overwhelmed. Head to the Kalpakçılar Caddesi street for antiques, jewelry, and souvenirs. I got some pretty ceramic bowls and evil eye beads for family back home. And don’t forget to pick up some Turkish delight and apple tea!

One evening, I headed to the Pierre Loti Cafe perched high over the Golden Horn for breathtaking sunset views. Sipping Turkish coffee as the sky turned pink and the silhouettes of mosques punctuated the skyline was unforgettable. This cafe is popular so come early to snag a table!

Karaköy, nearby the Golden Horn, transformed from an industrial zone into a trendy arts district filled with galleries, cafes, and workshops. I loved browsing the retail concept shops featuring avant-garde local designers, grabbing iced coffee, and admiring street art in this up-and-coming neighborhood.

Get pampered at a luxe spa in Istanbul. I had an indulgent Turkish bath ritual involving an invigorating scrub, rejuvenating massage, soothing facial, and relaxing soak in a rose petal-filled marble tub.
