Ankara often gets overlooked by travelers exploring Turkey who flock to the beaches in Antalya and Bodrum or the dazzling sights of Istanbul. However, as Turkey’s capital and second largest city Ankara has plenty to offer visitors. From fascinating museums and monuments to vibrant urban neighborhoods, delicious food, and opportunities to experience authentic local culture, Ankara is full of surprises.
As someone who recently spent time discovering the best things to do in Ankara, I’m here to convince you that this underrated city is worth a visit. Here are my top recommendations for making the most of your time in Turkey’s political and cultural capital
Explore Turkey’s History at the Museum of Anatolian Civilizations
No trip to Ankara is complete without visiting the Museum of Anatolian Civilizations. Housing artifacts from across Anatolia spanning thousands of years, it offers an unparalleled overview of Turkey’s ancient history. Marvel at 5,000 year old Hittite statues, intricate metalwork and ceramics from the Bronze Age, statues and sarcophagi from the Roman Period, and more. Budget at least 2-3 hours to take in the highlights.
Pay Respects at Anıtkabir, Atatürk’s Mausoleum
Anıtkabir is the imposing mausoleum built to honor Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, founder of modern Turkey. The site features exhibition halls highlighting Turkey’s War of Independence and the reforms instituted by Atatürk. The Ulus district below Ankara Castle brims with market stalls and shops carrying handicrafts, textiles, spices, traditional foods, and souvenirs. Haggle for a hand-woven wool carpet, embroidered goods, ceramics, or a copper lantern. Or pick up local foods like Ankara tulum cheese, kaymak (clotted cream), lokum (Turkish delight), dried fruits, nuts and baklava.
Sip Turkish Coffee in Kızılay
Kızılay is Ankara’s central commercial and nightlife hub. One of the best ways to experience local culture here is to claim a streetside table at a traditional coffeehouse. Savor Turkish coffee expertly prepared and served in a small cup with a cube of sugar. Accompany it with a nargile (waterpipe), baklava or other desserts, while watching the world go by.

For an authentic local food experience in a restored Ottoman mansion, head to LeMan Kültür in the Safranbolu neighborhood. Genclik Park is a popular park located in the Ulus district of Ankara. The park is home to a variety of attractions including a lake, playgrounds, picnic areas, walking paths and a ferris wheel.
We could actually see this park from the hotel we stayed at in Ankara. It looked beautiful all lit up at night. The park puts on many festivals and events throughout the year so make sure you look into this as you are planning your trip to the capital.
When you’re exploring Gençlik Park, you can enjoy restaurants, shops and an entertainment venue within the park. This is a great escape from the hustle and bustle of the city and one of the best places to visit in Ankara.
