For most people, turkeys are simply birds that end up on the dinner table come Thanksgiving But on a small family farm, one turkey defied the odds to become far more His name? Bert. This is the true story of Bert the Turkey, an unlikely animal friend whose personality made him stand out among the flock.
A Surprise Arrival
Our tale begins on a humble farm nestled in the countryside. The farmers had raised chickens cows and turkeys for years to sell at local markets. But one spring, an unexpected visitor arrived – a wild turkey hen appeared in the barnyard with a clutch of eggs.
Unable to determine where she came from, the family made her welcome. In time, 11 healthy chicks hatched. The farmers kept the young turkeys in a brood pen until they had grown enough feathers to join the rest of the flock outside.
While all the babies were cared for equally, one turklet stood out even as a hatchling. With his black and white speckled breast, this chick was distinctive from the start. His unique markings resembled a tuxedo, so the family named him Bert.
Personality Begins to Shine Through
As spring turned to summer, Bert’s siblings acted like typical juvenile turkeys – skittish and shy, scurrying away from people. But not Bert. He followed farmers around the barnyard like a puppy, peeping cheerfully.
While the other young turkeys scratched together in the dirt, little Bert would bathe in the sunlight, spreading his wings joyfully. When farmers paused to rest, Bert rushed over to gobble at their shoelaces and playfully peck their boots.
The family was amazed that one of his wild turkey mother’s offspring could act so tame. They speculated perhaps something about Bert’s markings made him stand apart in temperament as well. Whatever the reason, his cheerful, people-loving personality was undeniable.
Feathered Friend
Bert grew quickly under the farmers’ care. By late summer, he had filled out into a healthy adolescent turkey with shiny black, white, and brown feathers. As his siblings remained aloof, Bert only grew more attached to his human caretakers.
He followed farmers through barnyard chores like a feathery shadow. Bert would ride on the tractor and keep watch as they fed other animals. He even chased off pesky barn cats that came near his beloved humans.
The children on the farm looked forward to playing with Bert after school. He delighted in chasing them and getting into gentle wrestling matches. For the kids, Bert wasn’t just a pet – he was a true friend.
A Turkey in the House
As the weather turned colder, the other turkeys moved into the shelter of the barn. But Bert cries pitifully when locked up at night away from his humans.
So the family indulged him, allowing Bert to sleep in the house by the fireplace. He snuggled on a pillow by the hearth as if he were a dog or cat. In the morning, he woke the family with excited gobbling to start the day.
This turkey integrated into the household seamlessly. He watched TV with the kids after homework, tried to communicate with the household parrot, and even accompanied the family on car trips to town.
Turkey or not, Bert had become a beloved member of the family.
Flock of One
Even as Bert matured into a handsome adult tom turkey, his people-focused ways never changed. He had no interest in the hens on the farm or establishing dominance among the males.
When the other turkeys socialized, Bert stood apart. He was a lone wolf, preferring the camaraderie of humans to that of birds. The only turkey noises Bert made were happy gobbles when greeting his adopted family members.
Bert didn’t know he was a turkey. He likely saw the bespectacled reflective eyes looking back at him in the mirror and thought he was a human in feathered form. His family found Bert’s identity confusion hilarious and endearing.
A Minor Celeb
Stories started circulating in town about the farmer family’s uniquely affectionate turkey. Locals found it humorous when Bert appeared around town, walking farmers on a leash or riding along in the pickup truck.
People would stop by the farm just to meet the now famous Bert. He basked in the attention, puffing out his feathers to impress visitors. Bert’s sociable nature made him an approachable ambassador for the entire turkey species.
For a humble farm fowl, Bert’s reach became surprisingly broad. Fan mail even came addressed to “Bert the Turkey” from surrounding counties. He had become something of a minor celebrity!
Sunset Years
As Bert grew older, his pace slowed but his personality remained unchanged. Well into his twilight years, Bert still followed his human caretakers devotedly around the homestead.
His plumage became grizzled with age and he napped often, but never lost his spunk. Thanksgiving came and went each year, but no one considered eating their feathery friend. Bert was as much a member of the flock as the farmers’ own children.
With care and affection, Bert far outlived the average turkey lifespan. But inevitably, his aged body began to fail him. On a quiet spring day, with his owners by his side, Bert peacefully passed away.
The family gave him a gravesite of honor overlooking the barnyard where he first arrived as a chick nearly a decade before. For a turkey, Bert lived an exceptionally long, happy life full of friendship few birds could imagine.
Legacy of a Special Turkey
Bert’s story is truly one-of-a-kind. Never before or since has a wild turkey integrated so fully with a human family. He challenged preconceptions of what turkeys are capable of, showing individuality beyond instinct.
Bert proved turkeys can form real emotional bonds outside their own species. His sweet nature touched everyone who met him. Though Bert is gone, his legacy lives on in the hearts of those whose lives he touched.
So this Thanksgiving as you sit down to your holiday meal, remember Bert’s tale. Not all turkeys are just poultry – some, like Bert have feathers and feelings. And one person’s dinner could be another person’s cherished friend.
