At least two central Pa. based supermarket chains, The Giant Company and Weis Markets, as well as BJ’s Wholesale Club, are offering free turkeys ahead of Thanksgiving Day on Nov. 24.
Every year, supermarkets ramp up for the holidays by giving loyalty club members an opportunity to redeem shopping points toward the purchase of turkeys.
Typically, shoppers have to earn so many points to take advantage of the promotions. Supermarkets offer the turkeys as a loss leader, hoping shoppers take advantage and then end up spending their money on other products.
Between Nov. 1 and 10 when BJ’s members spend $150 in the same transaction, either in-club or online, they will receive a digital coupon for a free fresh or frozen Butterball whole turkey.
The coupon is redeemable from Nov. 12- 23, while supplies last. To qualify, members will need to create a digital account on online, so they can clip their free turkey offer in their coupon gallery, either through the BJ’s mobile app or online.
Shoppers started collecting rewards points toward free turkeys and other select reward options in early October. Those shoppers with 400 points can redeem them for a free frozen Shady Brook Farms turkey (a maximum size of 20 pounds) starting on Nov 11.
Points also can be used toward a $1 off any other brand of turkey. Tofurkey and Stouffer’s party size lasagna are also available as free alternatives.
Points can be redeemed online via Giant’s app or website or shoppers can receive a printed paper certificate in-store through Nov. 24.
Giant is limiting free turkeys to one per household. The chain said customers also can donate free turkeys to local food banks by turning their paper certificate in at store registers or redeeming points online via Giant’s app/website.
