I’ve created charts in this comprehensive guide to chicken meat weights and calories so you can quickly determine the precise weights and calories of various portions of chicken and for various cuts of meat.
Chicken Breast Weights and Calories
To determine average weights, I weighed individual raw chicken breasts with and without skin. The results are as follows:
One skinless, boneless chicken breast weighs about 180–200g (6 oz). 35-7. 05oz. This size chicken breast has 189–210 calories (in kcal).
One skin-on, boneless chicken breast typically weighs between 210 and 230g. 4-8. 1oz. This size chicken breast has 299–327 calories (in kcal).
Depending on the size of the chicken they came from, chicken breast weights can range from 140 to 150 g/4. 94-5. Large skinless chicken breasts can weigh up to 250g/8 ounces and 29 ounces, respectively. 82oz.
Use the table to find additional conversion weights for a single, skin-on or skinless, whole, raw chicken breast:
Weight Type | Weight of one average chicken breast (skinless) | Weight of one average chicken breast (skin-on) |
Grams | 180-200g | 210-230g |
Kilograms | 0.18-0.2kg | 0.21-0.23kg |
Ounces | 6.35-7.05oz | 7.4-8.1oz |
Pounds | 0.4-0.44lb | 0.46-0.5lb |
How Much Does Chicken Breast Skin Weigh?
When purchasing chicken breasts, you can choose to have the skin on or remove it. If you’re wondering how much the skin on a chicken breast weighs, the following information should help:
An average chicken skin weighs around 30g/1. Due to the fat content, chicken with the skin on has more calories per 1 oz than chicken without; a skin-on chicken breast typically has 299–327 calories (in kcal) compared to 189–210 without.

Chicken Leg Weights and Calories
A whole chicken leg, which includes the drumstick and upper thigh, is referred to as a chicken leg. Chicken legs are meatier cuts of chicken than drumsticks, which are the bonier part of the leg.
To determine the average weight per raw leg, I weighed individual chicken legs (including the skin and bone). The results are as follows:
One chicken leg typically weighs 200g/7 with the skin on and the bone in. 05oz. This size chicken leg has 448 calories (in kcal).
A smaller raw chicken leg (with the skin on and the bone in) weighs about 150g/5. Chicken leg weights vary depending on the size of the chicken they came from. 29oz and a large leg weighs around 250g/8. 8oz.
To find additional conversion weights for a single raw chicken leg that is either skin-on/bone-in or skinless and boneless, consult the table:

How Much Weight Does Chicken Lose When Cooked?
The quality of the chicken and whether water has been added both affect how much weight is lost when it is cooked.
Compared to skinless, boneless chicken, which will dry out more during the cooking process, chicken with bones and skin also retains more water. This is due to the fatty barrier, which aids in keeping moisture inside the food as it cooks.
Good quality free-range chicken will typically lose about 25% of its original weight when cooked, whereas chicken that has been given additional water may lose up to 40% of its original weight.
To see how much the weight of a 200g supermarket brand chicken breast decreased during cooking, I performed an experiment using it.
As you can see from the image below, the chicken breast lost 38 grams of weight, going from 200 to 123 grams. 5%.
How Much Chicken is in a Serving?
The chart below will give you an idea of what you need to buy for various cuts of chicken meat if you’re meal planning and need to know how much chicken you need per person.
These figures are based on adult-sized servings:
Type of chicken meat | Serving size per person |
Whole roasted chicken | 100-120g/3.5-4.2oz (cooked meat) |
Chicken breast | 1/2 – 1 whole chicken breast (depending on size) |
Chicken mini fillets | 4-5 mini fillets (cooked) |
Chicken drumsticks | 2 drumsticks |
Chicken thighs | 2-3 (skinless & boneless) 1-2 (skin on) |
